Does cold or warm weather make your running faster?
Variables
Independent Variable:
Temperature (F)
Dependent Variable:
Running time (sec.)
Variables That Need To Be Controlled:
Distance traveled, same people running, same timer, and having a start and finish.
Hypothesis
I hypothesize that the 60 degrees in the middle will make you run faster and colder is the slowest and hotter is a little faster then cold.
Graph of Hypothesis
Experimental Design
I am going to conduct an experiment that will help me determine if colder or warmer temperatures make your running speed faster. I will be conducting my experiment at the Madison Elementary School. There will be five people involved in this experiment. All will be running. Two people will be taking pictures at different times. Two people timing at different times. We are going to do ten trials each person each day for five days. I think that I will have plenty of data to make accurate results.
I will conduct the experiment and record my data as I go along. I plan to upload all my data at the same time and in to the wiki. To prove that i have conducted this experiment I will take pictures and then give them to my teacher.
Materials List
Pencil
Hard surface
Copy of spreed sheet
Tape measure
Four other people
Timer
Start and finish line
Thermometer
Camera
Detailed Procedure
Go to a large open area outside with materials.
Measure how long your run will be with a tape measure.
Set up a start and a finish at either ends of the tape measure.
Use the thermometer to take the temperature.
Record on copy of spreed sheet.
Have each person run as fast as they can with a person timing them each time a person runs.
Have each person run 5 times each.
Repeat steps 1-7, except inside.
Come back the next day and repeat steps 1-8.
Repeat steps 1-9 for 5 days total.
Photographer should be taking pictures through out the experiment.
Input all data and send all pictures to teacher.
Background Research
1.The best temperature for breathing is about 62 degrees it is not to hot nor to cold
Cold air constricks the air ways making it harder to breath
The original purpose of my experiment was to see if speed is affected by temperature (F). The experiment was tested by measuring a distance and then timing people in different temperatures and timing people to see if there was any change in time. The results of my experiment were as temperature gets colder time lowers.
Discussion
My hypothesis was that the temperature would reach its best speed at 65 degrees and then decrease evenly as the temperature got hotter or colder. My data did not support my hypothesis. The data showed that the colder it was the faster you went. the numbers were really close but that went up a little.
I think that the test I did went smoothly it only took a few minutes every day but there were some problems with using the gym so we used the hallway everything else took about 15 minutes. If i Could improve my experiment I would make the distance that the people run bigger. A future study might use this for an indoor track to figure out what the temperature inside would be so that the athletes could perform better.
